Requirements to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK
Becoming a driving instructor in the UK is a rewarding career that offers flexibility, independence, and strong earning potential. To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you must meet certain requirements set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Basic Eligibility Criteria
To start your journey, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years
- Have no more than 6 penalty points on your licence
- Be a fit and proper person (background checks will be carried out)
- Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
The ADI Qualification Process
To become fully qualified, you must pass all three parts of the ADI test conducted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency:
- ADI Part 1 – Theory Test
